Time and Distance for Travel Empty Time and Distance for Travel

In order to travel and move armies up and down the map of the Seven Kingdoms and Westeros, players must role play the travel happening.  Each post may account for no more than three days while a thread may have no more than one month elapse.  A character that needs to travel a distance that requires a month needs to go through at least 10 post rotations.  Post rotation is the process in which all players and the Game Master have posted.  When the person who started the thread posts for the second time, that is when the second post rotation beings.

*A note on distance while in game. When rping it is preferred that user's use leagues rather than miles to keep with the times that the series is set in. Use google to convert miles into leagues. The following information is set in miles to help users while starting out. If you happen to be from one of the majority of places outside the US and use kilometers, I'm sure google can help with that too.

The distance a character may travel on foot is up to 10 miles per 10sp in their speed stat.  10 miles per 10sp of speed is the absolute maximum on easy terrain while sacrificing 10sp of endurance per post.  Hills and forests would cut that distance by 3 miles per 10sp each or 30%; while mountains would and swamps would cut the distance by 50% each.  A leisurely distance would be 5 miles per 10sp as long as the character is traveling lightly.  Any character in armor and camping gear would be able to do no more than half of the current distance their speed would allow in a single day.

Horses make moving loads further and faster much easier.  They aren't able to be up for nearly long as a human character, but can travers distance much faster to make up for it.  An average horse could equal the 300 mile distance in three days assuming the terrain is a flat road.  Unfortunately horses aren't made to cover long distances in short periods of time and thus would face a death roll after being used in that turn.  1-3 would leave the animal dead, 4 would leave it lame and unable to continue for three posts, and a 5-6 would require one post of rest.  A warhorse would fair only slight better, as only 1-2 would mean death while 3-4 would make the horse lame.  A high quality, high breed horse would have the best chance of making it out alive.  High quality horses would still have a death roll, however the roll would be more in their favor.  Rolling a 1 would kill even a high breed horse.  2-3 would leave the horse lame for three posts.  4-5 would require at least one posts rest and rolling a 6 would allow the character to continue on at a regular pace.  At a standard rate a character could travel 30 miles in a day without risking an average horse.  A quality horse could travel an extra 20 miles per day.  Burdening a horse with a load would slow the beast and rider down less significantly than a human on foot.  A load baring horse would be slowed by 25%, as opposed to half of a footed human.  Hills and forests reduce the distance by 25% while mountains and swamps still reduce the overall distance traveled in the same time period by 50%.  High quality horses have smaller debuffs of 20% and 40% respectively.

No credit for the creation of these maps.  They are the most detailed ones found and suits the purposes of the site well.

Time and Distance for Travel Empty Distance in Relation to Westeros

Post by GM Mon Jan 30, 2017 4:57 pm

Now I know how long it will take for me to travel a certain distance but how do I know exactly how for one location is from another?  It's simple we guestimate using something we know the length of, the wall.  The wall is near about 100 leagues long so using that we can determine that path on the King's Road leading from King's Landing to Winterfell is right around 500 leagues.  What's a league you ask?  It's a unit of measurement much like miles.  1 league is roughly just under 3.5 miles.  We recommend using google to do the math for the conversation from leagues to miles, because when you're talking about 500 leagues, multiplying the number by 3.5 gives a significantly different answer than the actual 3.45234.  An extra 24 miles could mean the difference between a whole day of travel and arriving on the battlefield on-time or late.
